Harper's magazine book columnist

Starting with the May 2009 issue of Harper's magazine, Benjamin Moser will be the new columnist for their New Books column. He's taking over for John Leonard who recently died.Warning: Do not send books to Moser without first reviewing several copies of Harper's magazine to make sure your book fits their needs. To send review copies without doing that review is a waste of your time and money as well as their time. You'll find the address to send review copies in the magazine when you read it.

Amazon.com has added a new way of finding books called Author Stores. These are single pages that feature all books from a particular author, plus an author photo and related content, such as a biography, message board, and streaming video. Reader suggestion: mp3 audios

Here is a suggestion from Arnold Howard, a reader of this newsletter:I thought of this because I've been listening to mp3 files lately: When you are interviewed on TV or radio about your book, ask for permission to add an mp3 file of the interview to your website. Potential readers can listen to it from their mp3 players. Also include mp3 files of lectures that you give to libraries and other audiences.
Include the terms "mp3," "audio," and "download" to your audio page so that people can find the mp3 files from a search engine.
Audio is an intimate format--in some ways more intimate than video, because the listener can feel that you are right there with them as they do household chores such as washing the dishes. This is a good way to build relationships with readers.
Use a good quality digital recorder. The higher the quality of the audio, the more intimate the listening experience.
