Reiss, Fern, The Publishing Game: Bestseller in 30 Days (Newton, MA: Peanut Butter & Jelly Press, 2002), softcover, $19.95. A day-by-day guide to promoting a book. Note: It really doesn't show you how to create a bestseller in 30 calendar days, but it does show how to do 30 days worth of promotion to build awareness for your book.

Reiss, Fern, The Publishing Game: Find an Agent in 30 Days (Newton, MA: Peanut Butter & Jelly Press, 2002), softcover, $19.95.

Reiss, Fern, The Publishing Game: Publish a Book in 30 Days (Newton, MA: Peanut Butter & Jelly Press, 2002), softcover, $19.95. The titles of Fern Reiss's 30 Days books are somewhat misleading. At first glance, you think, “Gosh, I can have a book out in one month,” but as you read the book, you begin to understand that 30 days means 30 days of your activity — those 30 days being spread out over as much as six months or a year. But the thing I like about these books are the ways they break down a process into discrete activities that can be completed within a unit of time. So, even people who work full time can publish a book in 30 days — although they might take 30 Saturdays to do it. These 30 Days books by Fern Reiss offer a viable way for people to complete what may appear at first glance to be an overwhelming job, one that few people would otherwise tackle. By breaking down time-consuming complicated processes into simpler discrete steps that can be completed in a day, Reiss has opened up the world of writing and publishing books to people who have full-time jobs or other responsibilities that give them little free time. Just think: If you write just one page a day, you can have a book in less than six months! What are you waiting for?

Proposal Secrets — This e-course by W. Terry Whalin is the MBA program for book authors looking to get a great book contract from a traditional publisher. Among other things, he answers the 50 most important questions authors have about writing book proposals, finding literary agents, and signing with a book publisher. The title isn't sexy enough to give you a true idea of how much Terry covers in this e-course. Someday I hope he comes up with a better title, or at least a good subtitle. Cost: $225.

Secrets of Proposals Teleseminar — This teleseminar features W. Terry Whalin and eight top editors and agents telling you all the secrets of why book proposals fail or succeed. When Terry first planned this teleseminar, he was really excited about talking to these important decision-makers. After completing the teleseminar, he was even more excited (if that was possible), because the quality of the teleseminar exceeded his (and my) expectations. Normally $99, Terry has allowed me to extend you a huge discount of $79 so the final cost is only $20.
