USA TODAY Best Selling Books List

USA TODAY publishes a weekly bestseller list for books which runs every Thursday in the Life section. It features the top 50 books all in one list regardless of format (hardcover, trade paperback, or mass market paperback). The USA TODAY Best Selling Books list is compiled from computer generated reports from actual retail sales at the major bookstore chains as well as a few independent bookstores (3,000 “large-inventory, diverse-content” stores). The Top 150 bestsellers each week are featured online at top150.usatoday.com.

Below is a list of the reporting stores. If you want your book to get noticed by any bestseller list, you need to have your book at least in these stores.

Independent Bookstores

  • Books & Company, Dayton, Ohio
  • Davis Kidd Booksellers, three stores in Tennessee
  • Hawley-Cooke Booksellers, Louisville, Kentucky
  • Ruminator Bookstore, Saint Paul, Minnesota
  • Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Lexington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Powell's Books, Portland, Oregon
  • Tattered Cover Book Store, Denver, Colorado
  • Ingram Book Company (reporting the retail sales of independent bookstore subscribers)

Chain Stores

  • Amazon.com
  • Barnes & Noble
  • B. Dalton Bookseller
  • Bookstop and Bookstar
  • Books-A-Million and Bookland
  • Borders Books and Music
  • Brentano's
  • Crown Books
  • Doubleday Book Shops
  • Little Professor Bookstores (a selection)
  • Wal-Mart
  • Waldenbooks

Note that this list is compiled by computer so you can't fake the numbers. They'll notify you if you make it into to their top 150 bestsellers list.

USA TODAY Book Editor

Along with the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, USA TODAY is a major newspaper with 4.3 million readers every day. In fact, it probably gets more notice from the other media (radio and TV especially) than the other four newspapers combined. That's a major reason why you should try to get your books and authors noticed in USA TODAY. 9 times out of 10, an appearance in USA TODAY will lead to other media notice.

To submit your book for review, you can send a copy to Carol Memmott, Book Editor, USA TODAY, 7950 Jones Branch Drive, McLean VA 22107-0020; 703-854-3400; 800-USA-0001; Fax: 703-854-2053. Email: cmemmott@usatoday.com. While the paper reviews few books (only 5 to 6 on Thursdays), the book editor does make all books she receives available in a small library for other editors to use. The Top 150 bestsellers each week are featured online at top150.usatoday.com. In August 2002, Carol reviewed a few books herself, including Saved by Kate Morgenroth and Sleephead by Mark Billingham.

Nonetheless, if you really want to get noticed by a specific editor or reporter, send the book direct to her or him. USA TODAY has specific editors and reporters for almost any subject interest. Often, separate reporters will cover the same topic for different sections, for example, business travel (Money section) and leisure travel (Life section).
